SUMTER, S.C. – The opening day of the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships was filled with high energy and excitement as men’s and women’s tennis players from Divisions II, III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges took to the courts at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

In men’s singles play, seeded players prevailed in the DII, NAIA, and JUCO draws with the exception of two matches. In DII action, Max Hepp of Drury defeated Concordia N.Y.’s fourth-seeded Rafael Ferreira 6-2, 7-6. In the first round of the NAIA draw, Oscar Cornella of Olivet Nazarene topped No. 3 seed Daniel Rueda of Northwestern Ohio 6-4, 6-4.

In DIII men’s singles action, seeded players did not find as much success. Top-seeded Skyler Butts of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was the only seeded player to advance. The draw was highlighted by Noah Farrell’s (Middlebury) upset win over No. 2 seed and defending champion Nicolas Chua (University of Chicago), 6-2, 6-2.

In women’s singles action, the majority of seeded players prevailed with the exception of three upset victories. Men’s doubles finalists were decided on Thursday after players fought through two rounds of competition.

The DII doubles final will be a battle of the top two seeds as Concordia N.Y.’s top-seeded Jui Mao and Ofir Ginat and Armstrong State’s second-seeded Pablo Gor and Nacho Hernandez both picked up two victories. Two unseeded teams will face off in the DIII doubles championship as Trinity’s Adam Krull and Matt Tyler and Eric Roddy and Jack Gray (Sewanee) both battled their way through two rounds. The No. 1-seeded duo of Matias Hatem and Lachlan McPhee of Georgia Gwinnett will face their third-seeded teammates Jordan Cox and Kevin Konfederak in the NAIA doubles final. Top-seeded Guy Iradukunda and Ismael Mzai of Seminole State will take on No. 2 seed Ferran Calvo and Enrique Pardo of Tyler Junior College in the battle for the JUCO doubles title.
