CLEVELAND, Ohio – The semifinals are set after an eventful opening day of action at the 2016 ITA Division III National Men’s Team Indoor Championship at the Cleveland Racquet Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
(3) Emory def. (6) Kenyon, 8-1
No. 5 nationally-ranked Emory claimed the first victory of the weekend after taking out No. 10 Kenyon College in a decisive 8-1 match.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play and had no problem finishing the job in singles as they went on to take five of the six match-ups.
Josh Goodman gave the Eagles their fourth point of the day with his swift 6-0, 6-2 win over Tristan Kaye in the No. 5 spot while No. 16 Jonathan Jemison clinched the quarterfinal match with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kenyon’s Michael Liu in No. 2 singles.
Additional singles wins came from Emory’s Aman Manji, Adrien Bouchet, and No. 35 Andrew Harrington.
The Lords’ lone point came from senior Sam Geier who upset No. 2 nationally-ranked Rafe Mosetick in the No. 1 singles position. Mosetick was a finalist in the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Division III Singles Championship in October.
This is the Eagle’s second-straight #ITAIndoors semifinals appearance.
(4) Chicago def. (5) Trinity (Texas), 6-3
No. 6 nationally-ranked University of Chicago held off defending champion Trinity (TX) 6-3 to earn its spot in the #ITAIndoors semifinals.
Chicago took a 2-1 lead after picking up wins in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Nicolas Chua and David Liu, ranked second nationally, took out top-ranked 2015 NSCC Division III Doubles Champions Adam Krull and Matt Tyer 8-3 while Charlie Pei and Peter Leung overcame Paxton Deuel and Clayton Niess 8-2.
Pei and Leung posted singles wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots to give the Maroons a comfortable four points. David Liu, ranked 36th nationally, came through with the clinching victory as he defeated Chas Mayer in three sets in the No. 5 spot; 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Trinity’s performance was highlighted by No. 7 Deuel’s tightly-contested three-set win over No. 6 Chua in the No. 1 singles position; 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Chicago moves to 6-0 on the season.
(8) Case Western Reserve def. (1) Washington University – St. Louis, 6-3
The day was highlighted by host team Case Western Reserve University’s 6-3 upset victory over top-seeded Washington University in St. Louis.
With assistance from an energized home crowd, Case Western came out ready to play in doubles and earned victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The Bears came through with a tight 9-7 win over the Spartans to put the score at 2-1 heading into singles.
WashU’s John Carswell evened up score at 2-2 with his 6-1, 6-0 over CWRU’s Louis Stuerke in No. 4 singles. However, the Spartans responded with wins in the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 spots to secure the upset. The Spartan’s No. 6 singles player Joshua Dughi clinched with his win over WashU’s Shaun Berman; 6-2, 6-2.
The win puts the Spartans at 2-0 on the season.
(7) Carnegie Mellon def. (2) Pomona-Pitzer, 5-4
Seventh-seeded Carnegie Mellon followed with an upset victory of its own defeating No. 2 seed Pomona-Pitzer 5-4 in a #ITAIndoors quarterfinals battle.
The Tartans earned victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to gain an early edge, but the Sagehens won out in the No. 2 spot in a tight 9-8 match to get on the board before heading into singles play.
Singles action was a grind for both opponents with three of the six matches going into a third set. Pomona-Pitzer took the first two singles to go ahead in the match, but CMU posted three consecutive wins in the No. 2, 3, and 4 singles spots to pull off the upset.
No. 27 Daniel Levine, Vayum Arora, and Kenny Zheng were behind the Tartan’s singles victories with the match-clinching win coming from Zheng in the No. 3 spot as he survived a three-set thriller against Jonathan Kim; 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 7-5.
Saturday’s action begins with consolation play at 9 a.m. ET followed by main draw semifinals at 1 p.m. ET. About the ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championship
The ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championship is held annually each February. The men's event began in 2001 and will be held for the 16th time in 2016. The event features eight participating teams and is held over three days, beginning on Friday with the quarterfinals, followed by semifinals on Saturday and the final on Sunday. Four different schools have hosted the event, while Emory (5), Gustavus Adolphus (4), UC Santa Cruz (3), Kenyon (1), Washington-St. Louis (1) and Trinity (TX) (1) are past champions.
