TEMPE, Ariz. –
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association and PlaySight are excited to announce that nearly 40 collegiate dual matches in 2018 will be played utilizing PlaySight’s PlayFair Challenge System as part of the ITA and PlaySight PlayFair pilot program.

In addition, PlayFair will be used for the first time at an ITA national-level event, with two locations (Cal and USC) at this weekend’s 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

“We are thrilled to be in year two of our ITA PlayFair pilot and to be testing out video replay in 30-plus college tennis matches this spring,” said ITA Chief Operating Officer Erica Perkins Jasper. “It is very exciting to be including two of our ITA Kick-Off Weekend sites as well as select Pac-12 Conference matches as part of the pilot this year. So far our ITA coaches and officials have really embraced the technology as well as the positive effect it has had on sportsmanship in our events — it is definitely fun to be on the cutting edge with this technology and we are appreciative of PlaySight for all the work they have put in to continually improve their product.”

With its SmartCourt technology, PlaySight’s PlayFair Challenge System allows any player competing on a SmartCourt to challenge line calls. The ITA’s certified officials have access to multiple camera angles to review the point in question and render a final decision. PlaySight built the PlayFair system to operate as a video assistant referee (VAR) – a trend moving into all sports at the professional levels, including soccer, football and hockey.

The PlayFair Challenge System has been in effect the past two years at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships, and in 2017 saw two collegiate dual matches – one at USC and one at Virginia Tech – that utilized PlayFair.
