PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – With Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California, serving as the host site for the ITA Women’s All-American Championships for the 33rd consecutive year, Thursday’s full slate of main draw competition saw four of the top eight singles seeds and three of the top five doubles seeds fall in the opening round.
Vanderbilt’s Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca notched the day’s biggest upset, as the Commodores duo took down top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian of Michigan 8-6 in the Round of 16. In the main draw as a Lucky Loser, North Carolina State’s Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin made the most of their second chance, defeating No. 3 seed Ena Shibahara and Jada Hart of UCLA 8-6 to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Syracuse’s Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez booked their spot in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 8-7 (2) victory over No. 5 seed Alexa Bortles and Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss in the Round of 16.
A pair of Duke teams scored wins over seeded teams to stay afloat in the main draw. Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy defeated the No. 8 seed from Arkansas (Leolia Jeanjean and Giulia Pairone), while Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris got past the No. 6 seed from South Carolina (Hadley Berg and Paige Cline).
In singles play, Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech scored the largest upset in terms of seeding, as she defeated No. 3 seed Sara Daavettila of North Carolina 7-5, 6-3. Gabby Smith of USC, ranked No. 14 in the Oracle ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I National Preseason Rankings, turned back Pac-12 rival and No. 6 seed in the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, Melissa Lord of Stanford 6-3, 6-4.
Andrea Lazaro of Florida International advanced to Friday’s Round of 16 with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 8 seed Alizee Michaud of Auburn, while Washington’s Stacey Fung scored a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 5 seed Kate Fahey of Michigan.
The tournament’s top seed and 2016 runner-up, Ena Shibahara of UCLA, opened play with a three-set victory over Miami’s Estela Perez-Somarriba 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Perez-Somarriba’s teammate, Sinead Lohan, won her first round match 6-4, 6-2 against Virginia’s Rosie Johanson. Lohan, the No. 7 seed, claimed the Milwaukee Tennis Classic title two weeks ago, earning a spot in the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in the process.
